Howdy, I love your work. My ideas were these, first I recon you should crop the top back to where the original margin line was. Second, silver, lots of silver where ever you can, particularly highlighting the orange stripes.

Backgrounds...never been my strongpoint, personally I tend to keep them really simple or just flat out ignore them (sometimes it works sometimes it doesn't...)
But I shall provide what feedback I am able to...I like to work with patterns myself. But having no clue what you intend to do with the foreground...Maybe some subtle patterns to reflect on what you have in the foreground.
Just experiment, go with the flow and see what happens I guess,

Hey, it just occurred to me that when/if you give the fish colour, it would be cool if at least one of them had different coloured eyes. You know what I mean? Like David Bowie's, two eyes of different colours.

i like the idea of the different coloured eyes on one of the fish like bowie. but what about a bowie fish? two different coloured eyes and a lightning bolt coloured the same like the cover of the aladdin sane album. It would also help to solve the colour scheme for one of the fish.
